There was a time when a great Saturday meant having plans.
Lots of plans.
Places to go. People to see. Things to do.
Then you get a little older and realize something important:
The best Saturdays usually happen about twenty feet from your back door.
A grill.
A few old friends.
Something cold in the cooler.
Absolutely nowhere else you need to be.
Now that's a weekend.
The Backyard Beats Just About Anywhere
You could drive across town.
Find parking.
Wait for a table.
Pay twelve dollars for a beer.
Listen to music that's somehow both too loud and terrible.
Or...
You could walk into the backyard.
There's a chair with your name on it.
The beer is already cold.
The bathroom is nearby.
And nobody cares what shoes you're wearing.
At a certain age, that's not being boring.
That's called figuring things out.
Every Backyard Has a Guy Who Runs the Grill
You know him.
Maybe you are him.
He's standing beside the grill with a pair of tongs in one hand and a drink in the other.
He has a system.
Nobody knows what the system is.
But questioning it is strongly discouraged.
"Don't flip those yet."
"Close the lid."
"I know what I'm doing."
He's been cooking burgers since before half the neighborhood was born.
He doesn't need a recipe.
He doesn't need a timer.
And he definitely doesn't need somebody standing behind him asking:
"Are they done yet?"
The answer is simple.
They'll be done when they're done.

Cold Beer Tastes Better Outside
We're not scientists.
But we're pretty sure this is true.
A cold beer at a fancy restaurant?
Good.
A cold beer in your own backyard after mowing the lawn?
Better.
A cold beer beside the grill while your buddy tells the same story you've heard fourteen times?
Now we're talking.
Maybe it's the sunshine.
Maybe it's the lawn chair.
Maybe it's knowing you don't have anywhere to be tomorrow morning.
Whatever the reason, some things just belong together.
Backyards.
Old friends.
Cold beer.
The Stories Get Better Every Year
Get a few old friends together long enough and eventually somebody says:
"Remember that time..."
And that's when the real entertainment begins.
The same stories come back every summer.
The road trip.
The fishing disaster.
The motorcycle that was definitely faster than anyone remembers.
The terrible first car.
The concert nobody can completely remember.
The time somebody tried to fix something and somehow made it significantly worse.
Everybody has heard the stories before.
Nobody stops them.
Because somehow, they get better every time.
A little funnier.
A little bigger.
A little less historically accurate.
That's not lying.
That's seasoning the story.

Good Friends Give Terrible Advice
There's something special about advice from an old friend.
It's usually delivered with complete confidence.
Whether he knows what he's talking about is a separate issue.
Car trouble?
"I know a guy."
Back pain?
"You just need a better chair."
Thinking about buying something expensive?
"Do it. You can't take it with you."
Argument with the wife?
Suddenly everybody gets very quiet and starts drinking.
That's wisdom.
Knowing when not to give advice might be the most valuable advice of all.
Nobody Is Checking the Clock
That's one of the best parts.
Nobody made a reservation.
Nobody scheduled an activity.
Nobody has a spreadsheet.
The burgers go on when they go on.
Another drink gets opened when somebody wants one.
Maybe somebody puts on some music.
Maybe somebody starts telling stories.
Maybe the whole afternoon disappears without anything particularly important happening.
Perfect.
After spending enough years living by clocks, calendars, meetings, deadlines, practices, appointments, and alarms...
A Saturday with no schedule feels pretty good.
The Music Was Better Then — So Play It
Every good backyard eventually needs music.
And this is not the time to experiment.
Put on the songs everybody knows.
The ones that immediately turn:
"Hey, remember this one?"
into a twenty-minute conversation about concerts, cars, girlfriends, road trips, and questionable decisions from 1987.
Nobody needs a playlist called "Chill Backyard Vibes."
You've already got one.
It's called the music you grew up with.
Turn it up.
Not too loud, though.
We're not animals.

The Dress Code Is Simple
No reservations means no dress code.
Old jeans?
Perfect.
Shorts you've owned for twelve years?
Even better.
Your favorite T-shirt that makes your wife roll her eyes?
That's the one.
A good weekend shirt doesn't need to impress anybody.
It just needs to be comfortable, make you laugh, and maybe start a conversation with another guy who gets the joke.
Beer.
Fishing.
Guitars.
Motorcycles.
Retirement.
Grandpa life.
Fixing stuff nobody asked you to fix.
At this point, your shirt might as well tell people exactly what they're dealing with.
You Don't Need Much for a Good Saturday
That's something you learn with time.
The best weekends don't always need tickets.
Or reservations.
Or expensive plans.
Sometimes all you need is:
A backyard.
Something on the grill.
A cooler that isn't empty.
Music you actually like.
A few people who know all your old stories and still show up anyway.
That's enough.
Actually...
That's pretty hard to beat.
Here's to the Weekend You've Earned
You worked all week.
Or maybe you're retired and every day technically qualifies as the weekend now.
Either way, Saturday still feels different.
So fire up the grill.
Pull out the lawn chairs.
Put on some good music.
Open something cold.
Tell the same old stories.
Give your friends some questionable advice.
And don't worry too much about accomplishing anything.
Some days are meant for getting things done.
Saturdays are meant for enjoying what you've already earned.
At The Grumpy Old Man, we make shirts for men who know that good beer, great stories, old friends, and a little attitude can turn an ordinary backyard into the best seat in town.
Good beer. Great stories. Legendary attitude.
